The Buena Vista (GA) City Council
unanimously adopted a smokefree workplace ordinance Tuesday night that will
eliminate smoking at all indoor workplaces and public places in the city
limits.
The law goes into effect April 1.
"We see this as the right
thing to do and the right time to do it," Mayor Ralph Brown Jr. said.
"As a community leader, I am concerned with anything that can cause harm
to our citizens, especially our youth."
"We're 100 percent behind
it," said Donna Armer, who, with her husband, Ray, operates Sign of the
Dove Bed and Breakfast in Buena Vista. "We've never had smoking. We're
thrilled."
"I am in favor," said
Cheree Slaughter, who has operated Aunt Mary's Country Cafe since Aug. 15.
"My facility is already smokefree. I don't have any complaints about it.
Several customers commented they are glad I don't allow smoking. It's worked
out fine."
"Smokefree air is a matter of
dignity and respect for workers," says Joe Cherner, founder of BREATHE--
Bar and Restaurant Employees Advocating Together for a Healthy
Environment. "No one should have to breathe tobacco smoke pollution
to hold a job, because it causes cancer, heart disease, and respiratory
disease."
